The Matteses have been living in the virtual world, Second Life, for over a year, exploring its terrain and interacting with its peculiar inhabitants. The result of their "video-game flanerie" is a series of portraits, entitled "13 Most Beautiful Avatars."
According to the Matteses the avatars' icons recall questions common to earlier eras of portraiture, including the cultural and psychological context of the images, and the relationships between high art and subculture, between contemporary art and "traditional" art forms, and between art and life itself.

Franco und Eva Mattes - bekannt durch ihre Pranks Nikeground und Darko Maver (um nur zwei zu nennen) - haben eine neue Ausstellung gestartet: 13 Most Beautiful Avatars in The Italian Academy, Columbia University (New York).
Das als 01.org bekannte Künstlerpaar lebt seit über einem Jahr in der virtuellen Welt von Second Life und erforscht das Terrain und die Interaktion mit den Einwohnern. Die Ergebnisse ihrer "video-game flanerie" ist eine Serie von Portraits mit dem Titel "13 Most Beautiful Avatars."
01.org zufolge werfen die Icons der Avatare Fragen zu früheren Formen des Portraits und der kulturellen und psychologischen Kontexte derselben auf. Das Verhältnis zwischen Hochkunst und Subkultur, zwischen zeitgenössischer Kunst und "traditionellen" Kunstformen und zwischen Kunst und dem Leben selbst, wird durchleuchtet.
